I have been visiting Nicolas Potel for several years now and this is his most impressive set of wines to date. I have also accidentally bumped into 'Nico', as he's called by seemingly everyone, at some of the best addresses in Burgundy. Thus, it is no great surprise that some of his wines are as good as they are because many of his sources are among Burgundy's elite. He began his négociant operation in 1997 and has quickly built it up; recently, he added a new cellar across from Domaine Alain Michelot to complement the old cellar where he started his operation across from the Nuits St. Georges train station. He buys both grapes and must. Once he has sourced the raw material, he then either makes the wine or, in the case of purchased must, does the élevage and bottling himself. His philosophy is disarmingly simple as he professes to search only for the best raw materials, including the best wood he can find, and then basically just leave the wines to make themselves. He uses the absolute minimum SO2 he can and racks only when he believes it is absolutely necessary.
