Philippe Rossignol Description
In 2017, Philippe Rossignol produced a vibrant, high-toned Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles that is elegant, finesseful and slow to reveal itself. Be sure to use a good large glass. The wine has a dark, saturated ruby color, nearly purple at the center, then cools to bright fuchsia just at the edge. Fresh aromas of black and red fruit, including ripe wild cherries, raspberry preserves, and crushed pomegranate suffuse the nose, along with fresh white tobacco, dried geraniums, and a faint suggestion of freshly crushed pine bark. The wine is concentrated, but nimble and fresh on the palate, with a stony core of mineral-saturated red fruit flavors that echo the nose. Over time in the glass it adds grated mandarin zest, cardamom pods, and dark roasted coffee beans and grows more voluminous, remaining supple, layered, and nuanced through its long, refreshing, very elegant finish. Another perfect example of the kind of Burgundy that motivates growers around the world to try their hand at Pinot Noir.
